Getting out of the south

Arriving in Marsa Alam is straightforward; leaving it on your own schedule is less so. The resorts are spread thinly along an empty coast, there is no taxi rank to speak of, and hotel-arranged cars at short notice are priced accordingly. Booking the leg in advance fixes both the time and the fare.

If you are catching a flight

Tell us the departure time. For an international flight out of Hurghada, allow three hours at the airport plus three and a half hours of driving, and we will suggest a pickup with margin on top. This is not a route to cut fine - it is long, and there are few alternatives if something goes wrong.

• Give us the exact hotel name and, if it is remote, the nearest landmark.
• Do not dive within 24 hours of flying. If you are diving here and flying from Hurghada, plan the last dive accordingly.
• Dive equipment is no problem, but tell us in advance.
• Take water for the drive; the coast road is empty for long stretches.
• Child seats on request with advance notice.
