Marsa Alam is about 270 km south of Hurghada, roughly three and a half hours down the coast road. The further south you go the emptier it gets, and that is exactly why divers and snorkelers keep going.
The reefs off Marsa Alam see a fraction of the traffic that Hurghada's do. The seagrass bays hold green turtles and, at a few sites, dugongs. Elphinstone Reef offshore is one of the best-known walls in the Red Sea. It is a quieter, more serious stretch of coast.
A private air-conditioned vehicle for your group alone, up to 4 passengers with room for 3 pieces of luggage, at a price agreed before you travel.
From $80 for the vehicle, one way.
