Hurghada to Aswan by road is about 700 km and eight hours - west across the Eastern Desert to the Nile, then south along the river through Luxor, Esna and Edfu to Aswan.

Why drive rather than fly

Most people booking this are joining a Nile cruise that starts in Aswan, and the drive removes the awkward part: no domestic flight, no baggage limits on dive gear or suitcases, no second transfer at the far end. Your car arrives at the boat.

The second half of the drive is also genuinely worth seeing. Once you reach the Nile the road runs through farmland, villages and palm groves - the Egypt that exists between the monuments.

Good to know before you book
