El Quseir is about 140 km south of Hurghada, roughly two hours by road, and it is the most interesting town on this coast. It was a working port for well over a thousand years - the departure point for pilgrims heading to Mecca and for trade to the Red Sea and beyond - and it still looks and feels like a real place rather than a resort development.
An Ottoman fortress in the middle of town, coral-block houses along the old streets, a small working harbour, and reefs offshore that are largely untouched. The pace is entirely different from Hurghada, which for a certain kind of traveler is the whole appeal.
A private air-conditioned vehicle for your group alone, up to 3 passengers with room for 5 pieces of luggage, and a driver who meets you inside arrivals with a name sign.
From $45 for the vehicle, one way.
