Description

Fayoum to Hurghada is roughly 480 km and around six hours - northeast past Cairo, then east across the desert to the Red Sea coast.

Where you are coming from

Fayoum is a depression southwest of Cairo built around Lake Qarun, with a very different landscape from anywhere else in Egypt: farmland, waterwheels, the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls, and Wadi El Hitan - the Valley of the Whales - where 40-million-year-old whale fossils lie in the desert. It is a serious destination in its own right, and it is nowhere near the Red Sea.

What you get

A private air-conditioned vehicle for your group alone, up to 4 passengers with room for 2 pieces of luggage, and a driver who runs the route regularly.

Good to know before you book

  • Give us the exact pickup point in Fayoum - the governorate is large and the lake, the city and the desert lodges are far apart.
  • The route passes the Cairo ring road. Leaving early avoids the worst of that traffic and can save an hour.
  • Tell us if you have more than two suitcases so we can send a larger vehicle.
  • Take water and food for the drive.
  • Child seats available on request with advance notice.
  • Tell us your Hurghada hotel so the driver knows which part of the strip he is heading for.

From $140 for the vehicle, one way.
