Semi-Submarine Trip from Makadi Bay

Children under a certain age cannot dive, and plenty of them are not ready to snorkel either. This trip exists for exactly that reason, and at ten dollars it is the cheapest way to show a child the Red Sea reef properly.

The semi-submarine has an observation deck several meters below the surface with panoramic windows along both sides. You sit down, in air conditioning, and watch coral and fish pass by at close range.

What you will see

Bright hard corals and soft corals moving in the current, and the reef fish that live among them - parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, wrasse and schools of anthias. Children tend to spot more than adults do, because they watch one window instead of trying to see everything at once.

How it runs

The trip lasts around 2 hours. Snorkeling equipment and life jackets are included, and there is a stop where anyone who wants to swim in the clear water beside the reef can do so. Everyone else stays comfortable below deck.

Good to know before you book

• Transfers to and from any hotel within Makadi are free and included. Pickup from outside Makadi is not covered - ask us and we will quote it.
• Bring towels if anyone plans to snorkel.
• Photography services are not included. Bring your own camera and turn the flash off, or every picture will be a photograph of your own flash.
• The observation deck is enclosed. There is open deck above if anyone prefers it.
• The trip is safe and comfortable for all ages, including very young children, who do not need to be able to swim.

Please treat the reef with care

If you use the snorkeling stop, keep well clear of the coral - do not touch it, stand on it or break pieces off. It is alive, it grows slowly, and it is the only reason any of this is worth seeing.
