Overview

Emergency First Response is a first aid course, not a diving course. It is run by PADI and it is a prerequisite for Rescue Diver, which is why it is usually found on a dive centre's list - but the skills it teaches are for the roadside, the kitchen and the swimming pool at least as much as for the water.

There are no prerequisites of any kind. You do not need to dive, or want to dive, or ever have been in the sea.

The two parts

Primary Care (CPR) covers life-threatening emergencies: assessing an unresponsive person, chest compressions and rescue breathing, using an AED, serious bleeding, shock and spinal injury management, and barrier use to protect yourself.

Secondary Care (First Aid) covers everything that is not immediately life-threatening but still needs handling properly: injury assessment, bandaging, splinting, burns, and recognizing illness. This is the part you are statistically far more likely to use.

Both parts are taught for adults, children and infants, because the technique differs significantly and the difference matters.

Why it is worth a day of your holiday

Most people who witness an emergency do nothing - not from indifference, but because they are not sure what to do and are afraid of making it worse. This course exists to remove that hesitation. You practice on manikins until the sequence is automatic, and the confidence that produces is the entire point.

Practical details

  • The course is normally completed in one day.
  • Certification is valid for 2 years, after which a refresher renews it.
  • There is no minimum age, though younger participants need a parent's consent.
  • Transfers are included from hotels inside Hurghada; a $5 per person supplement applies from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Ahyaa, El Gouna and Soma Bay.
  • Learning materials and the certification card are charged separately.
  • Lunch and drinks are not included.
